One week out..
Football is humanity's favourite game.(Quite in the cheep seats). It unites us in a community of enthusiasm in a way that no other event, religion or ideology does and this time round New Zealand made it to opening night. Spare a thought for those Russian's and Croats who have another 4 years to wait.
I can still remember buying the stickers and filling in the world cup album. Brazil won a classic beating Italy 4-1 in the final but my favourite piece of trivia was that El Salvador went to war with Honduras as a result of rioting during the qualification match. As it happens in 2010 Honduras have made it to the finals.
One thing common to all world cups is crappy team (sing along) song, this time being no exception, but then I discovered Fast Forward.
Fast Forward is a project with a simple premise; Indiecater, the Irish Indie record company asked some of their favourite bands to write about one of the 32 countries participating in South Africa 2010, the only stipulation being that the song be themed on their chosen country and if possible be football related.
The compilation is available for download and is excellent value. For those of you with discerning taste; it would be a super addition to any World Cup party. More proof that the great tournament makes people raise their game.
The NZ offering is Aotearoa by Adam and Darcie hailing from Utah and not bad it is too, definitely should make the knockout stages.
I could not find a video of Aotearoa but here is "Linoleum" performed by Adam and Darcie.
